Dean is a professor in the MFA Program in Creative Writing & Environment at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and at the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers. In August, 2011 he will begin teaching creative writing at Grinnell College.

He has an article titled "Rainbows for All God's Children" forthcoming in Orion Magazine.
